The Inspiration

The “Cape George” is a classic West coast Seine Boat. She fished salmon and herring for over 50 years up and down the Coast.

Seine Fishing is very different from trolling, and similar to gill netting in the sense both kinds of fishing use nets.

The “Purse Seine ” literally encircles a school of salmon or herring, and completely encloses the catch . Then, with the help of a large barrel, the crew will mechanically haul the fish aboard.

The “Cape George” is being restored in Nanaimo Harbour by the Historical Society.

What attracted me to paint this ship were her colours.

Douglas fir is the prefer red timber for planking on fish boats, for the simple reason it is a very hard wood, the hardest of the softwoods on the coast. Over the years as Douglas Fir is repeatedly varnished, it takes on a bright orange color. This, to an artist, is a wonderful contrast to the blues and grays of the ocean.
